The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) officially ceased operations on July 4.
When President Trump signed an executive order in January 2025 to establish DOGE, July 4, 2026, was slated to be its expiration date.
“While the formal mission of DOGE has come to an end, the mission to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse will continue. Good stewardship of taxpayer dollars and accountable government are not temporary initiatives. We hope those principles endure long into America’s next 250 years,” DOGE stated.
“It has been our greatest honor to serve the American people,” it added.
“Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”

More from The Independent:
DOGE’s efforts resulted in an estimated $11 billion federal budget deficit from payments to employees who accepted a “Fork in the Road” offer and severely impacted the U.S. Agency for International Development.
ADVERTISEMENTHundreds of thousands of federal employees either voluntarily left or were fired during Musk’s tenure, which aimed to slash the federal workforce.
Federal agencies are now actively rehiring, with over 104,000 new positions listed in the first five months of this year, a significant increase from the previous period.
The Office of Personnel Management is overseeing a “reshaping” of the federal workforce, prioritizing new full-time hires over contractors to fill gaps, reversing Musk’s previous efficiency-driven cuts.
“DOGE says it delivered $215 billion in savings, falling well short of its original $1 trillion target,” Fox Business noted.
“President Trump was given a clear mandate to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse from the federal government,” White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said, according to POLITICO.
“He has made significant progress in making the federal government more efficient to better serve the American taxpayer,” he added.

POLITICO shared further:
The White House didn’t address questions about whether DOGE will officially fold, as foretold in Trump’s order, or if it has already.
And no final DOGE review is incoming, according to Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought — known as the man who wished to put federal employees “in trauma.”
“We have no plans to do kind of a closing DOGE report,” Vought said at a hearing Tuesday. “We’re always happy to give you our assessment of that work. I think it made some really important strides.”
ADVERTISEMENTThe White House budget proposal released in April sought $35 million for the U.S. DOGE Service. However, at that same hearing, Rep. Dave Joyce (R-Ohio) noticed in the request “that DOGE was pretty much eliminated.”
On his first day back in the White House, Trump signed the executive order setting up DOGE, renaming the U.S. Digital Service, an Obama-era office, as the U.S. DOGE Service. “The U.S. DOGE Service Temporary Organization shall terminate on July 4, 2026,” the order said.
