Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency as a fast-moving brushfire just outside of Reno has grown to over 10,500 acres.

“I have declared a state of emergency in Washoe County as we respond to the Hawk Fire, which is spreading quickly and threatening homes and structures,” Lombardo said.

“Please heed all warnings from local officials, evacuate immediately if you are ordered to do so, and do not put yourself or first responders at risk,” he added.

“The #HawkFire is still a rapidly evolving situation. Stay vigilant and keep yourself informed if you are in the affected areas,” Lombardo wrote on X.

FOX5 Vegas shared further:

Under the declaration, all state agencies are directed to work through the Nevada Emergency Operations Center to supplement local efforts.

“This is an active and rapidly evolving situation, and I urge everyone in the affected areas to remain vigilant and follow the direction of local officials,” continued Governor Lombardo. “The state is fully engaged, and we are working alongside local authorities and first responders to deploy every available resource to protect lives, safeguard communities, and keep Nevadans out of harm’s way.”

“Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County as about 400 firefighters battle the blaze on the ground and from the air. Three helicopters are flying overnight missions to protect structures. Officials are also monitoring the fire’s proximity to a Washoe County correctional facility, with the sheriff’s office prepared to act if conditions shift,” Fox News wrote.

“Structures have already been burned in this fire and your life is more important than a building,” Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve said.

“We’re closely monitoring the #HawkFire across the Tahoe region and Nevada, with state and local partners deployed and coordinating on the ground and in the air,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom said.

“Residents in impacted areas should continue following guidance from local emergency officials,” he added.

A fast-growing wildfire spread from the Sierra foothills toward the center of Reno early Sunday, as approximately 90,000 residents were urged to evacuate.

The fire has been burning across a rugged section of the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest, where Peavine Mountain is ringed by homes and businesses on the Nevada side of the California state line, and some of these homes have been consumed by the flames.

Six people, including three responders, have been injured, officials said Sunday.

The “GO NOW” zone, where 42,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate, reached the edge of the University of Nevada campus as the Hawk Fire grew to more than 13,000 acres. An additional 45,000 people were in the evacuation warning zone and encouraged to leave now and be prepared to stay away for several days to clear the roads for first responders.

As of Sunday morning, the Hawk Fire was 0% contained and was moving in different directions as the winds changed, complicating the fight.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a human, but the investigation is ongoing, authorities said Sunday.
