A 23-year-old Tucson police recruit was killed and his fiancée, a Pima County corrections officer, was wounded in a shooting inside their Arizona home Wednesday morning.
Now a manhunt is underway for two masked suspects, and investigators are asking the public to watch for a gray SUV that may be missing its fuel door.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department identified the recruit as Carlos Ramirez.
Ramirez had previously served as a corrections officer with the sheriff’s department before joining the Tucson Police Department as a recruit. His fiancée, also 23, remains employed as a Pima County corrections officer.
Deputies were called shortly before 6 a.m. to a residence in the 7700 block of South Enchanted Spring Drive, roughly 17 miles southwest of Tucson.
They found Ramirez dead inside the home.
His fiancée had also been shot and was taken to a hospital with injuries authorities described as non-life-threatening. She was listed in stable condition.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Ramirez and his fiancée share a child. Authorities initially described the couple as married before clarifying that they were engaged.
Investigators have not announced a motive, and no arrests had been reported as of Wednesday afternoon.
Officials say the two suspects are Hispanic males who were wearing all-black clothing and ski masks at the time of the attack.
The sheriff’s department released three images of the vehicle detectives are trying to locate:

The SUV is believed to be a gray Acura MDX from model years 2007 through 2013. One of the clearest identifying details may be the missing cover over the fuel-filler area.
KGUN 9 reported that law enforcement closed South Enchanted Spring Drive between West Star Wash Loop and Long Pond Walk Way while deputies processed the scene.
The station’s first alert described a death investigation and asked drivers to avoid the neighborhood. Its reporting was updated as Sheriff Chris Nanos and Tucson Police Chief Monica Prieto disclosed that both victims worked in law enforcement.
KGUN’s later update identified Ramirez, confirmed that he had previously served as a Pima County corrections officer and reported that his wounded fiancée was stable. It also carried the sheriff’s department’s warning that detectives were looking for two men in black clothing and ski masks.
The reporting reflects how rapidly the case changed Wednesday morning: a closed street and death investigation became a homicide, an injured corrections officer and an active search for masked suspects in a vehicle the public could help locate.
The local station also published the latest manhunt alert:

Fox News Digital reported that Nanos and Prieto addressed the shooting during a joint briefing at the scene.
Prieto called Ramirez’s death a tragic event and a tremendous loss for the department, the city and the wider community. She urged anyone with information to contact authorities immediately.
Nanos said it was a sad day for law enforcement and confirmed that the two 23-year-olds share a child. Fox also reported the important relationship correction: officials first referred to the victims as husband and wife, then clarified that Ramirez and the wounded officer were engaged.
The sheriff said detectives were actively pursuing multiple suspects and expected additional briefings as the investigation developed. The department later narrowed its public alert to two men and the gray Acura, while stressing that the case remained active.
KVOA News 4 Tucson also confirmed that the shooting occurred at the couple’s southwest-side home and that Ramirez’s fiancée was stable. The outlet shared the sheriff’s department’s release identifying Ramirez and the suspect vehicle.
